Journal Time

The kids draw a picture and use their phonics and reading skills to write sentences about things that are happening in their daily lives.

Reading

We use the MacMillian McGraw Hill Reading series.  It is set up to teach a new theme every three weeks.  Every week it introduces a new story to support the original theme.  We also have new sight words every week in Reading.

Phonics

Our Saxon phonics program introduces a new letter each week.  It also reviews the letters and sounds already taught on a daily basis.  We also teach visual phonics to support the sounds.  This helps the kids to sound out new words that they are learning.  It is very successful in helping to teach the children to read.  The series also introduces a new sight word each week, these are words that we can not sound out, we just have to learn them by sight :)

Math

We use Saxon math.  New skills are taught sporadically while continuing to review the old ones.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies series is Scott Foresman.  It touches on all kinds of basic social studies skills such as families, jobs, communities, weather, seasons and maps.

Centers

Every week we have four centers. Four days out of the week the kids go to a different center.  The centers typically reinforce a skill they are learning that week.  One of the centers each week is play time, so that the kids have the opportunity to play with their friends in positive environment. We also make crafts or quilt pieces for the wall along with math, reading and literacy skills.
