7th & 8th GRADE PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

7th & 8th graders will be required to pass at least 3 of the 4 core subject areas to be promoted to the next grade level.  Students failing to meet this requirement will be held back for one school year.

COURSE LOAD-GRADES 9-12

The required course load is 35 semester hours a semester.  Each subject carries 5 semester hours unless otherwise stated.

COURSE LOAD-GRADES 6-8

The program in the middle grades includes instruction for each grade each year in the following subject areas:  Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Health, Art, Spanish and Music.  Instruction may be provided through separate courses, integrated blocks of time, and/or through exploratory programs.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-teacher conferences are held the first quarter.  During conferences, the staff is available to answer any questions concerning student grades, assignment completion, or classroom behavior.  Students are encouraged to attend the conferences with their parents.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE

Those students who are unable to pass the academic requirements of the school may receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of their fourth or fifth year as recommended by the Administration and approved by the Board of Education.

INDEPENDENT STUDIES

A teacher may offer additional classes to a student with a "B" or above grade average, who requests a class not presently offered.

No independent study courses will be offered during the school year to make up for failed courses, unless a teacher consents and has the time to work with a student.

TESTING

Various tests in addition to tests given in the classroom will be given to students throughout the year.  Tests included in the testing program are achievement, aptitude, intelligence, reading and college entrance tests.

Student's scores on these tests are recorded on the student's permanent record.  All students, not on an IEP will be tested the same and held to the same standards and expectations.

DROP AND ADDS

A student in Grades 9-12 may drop and add a course during the first two days of the semester.  At the end of the two days, no student is to drop or add classes for the remainder of the semester unless special circumstances apply.

To drop or add a course during the first two days, the student must obtain signatures from their parents or guardians, the teachers involved, the guidance counselor, and the principal.

HOMEWORK

During each class period a certain amount of time is devoted to supervised study.  All preparation cannot be completed during the class period, or perhaps during the scheduled seminar; thus, a certain amount of home study may be necessary.  An important objective of school life is the development of the ability to work independently of the teacher.  Recreation, home duties, and studying need to be coordinated so that the three items may be given the required amount of time.

HONOR ROLL

In order for a student to be listed on the honor roll, a student must fulfill the following:

1.      Cannot have a grade of "C" or below.

2.      Must maintain an average of 86% or better to attain regular honor roll.  Honor Roll with Distinction is attained when a student receives 93% or better in all classes in which he/she is enrolled.

3.      Percentage grades are given for physical education, but do not get factored into the cumulative total.  Music-band and vocal will be used in the cumulative total for scholastic points.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Membership in the National Honor Society shall be based on scholarship, service, leadership, and character.  To be eligible for election to membership in the Eustis-Farnam Chapter, the candidates must have been in attendance for a period equivalent to one semester in this school.

Candidates eligible for election must be members of the sophomore, junior, or senior class.  Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum scholarship average of 86 percent or above.  Students meeting this criterion may then apply to be considered for membership.  Any application that is late will result in automatic rejection of the applicant.  Their election shall then be considered on their service, leadership, and character.  The selection of members to the Eustis-Farnam Chapter shall be determined by the members of the high school faculty.

A National Honor Society member must maintain the standards for membership in order to retain his/her membership.  A member may be allowed one warning period.  Once a member is dismissed he/she is never again eligible for membership in a National Honor Society.

WEEKLY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT

All students in grades 7-12 will have a weekly eligibility requirement.  A student will become ineligible if he/she receives a down list notice in two or more classes.  Teachers will turn in a list of students who are on the list by 8:00 a.m. on Monday to the principal and inform the student that they were placed on the ineligible list.  When a student becomes ineligible, they will not be permitted to participate in or at any school-sponsored events or activities for that week.

PROGRESS REPORT TO PARENTS

Progress reports will be sent to parents at midterm (5 weeks) of each quarter.  After the reports have been sent out, the principal will construct a down list that will be given to every teacher.  The list will be kept confidential by the teachers.

INCOMPLETE WORK

If a student receives an INCOMPLETE for a class for either a nine-week period or semester, the student will be given (1) week in which to make up the work.  In case of illness which is of a serious nature and which has caused the student to fall behind, the student may request an extension of time above the one week to make up the work.  The Principal may waive the one-week period in case of illness.

REPEATING FAILED CLASSES

If a class failed is needed as a prerequisite or as a requirement for graduation, the student may make up the course by:

1.      Repeating the course during the regular school year, if it can be scheduled.

2.      Paying the fees and completing a correspondence course through the University of Nebraska at Lincoln Extension Division.

3.      A summer study program through a qualified teacher with fees to be determined and to be paid by the student.

4.      Attending a summer program offered by another school, at the student's expense.

Although electives are counted in computing total credit hours, students are not required to repeat an elective class that was failed.  Depending upon a course requirement, however, failure of an elective course may preclude a student from enrolling in a successive course.

Students may be required to repeat one or both semesters of a failed required course.

Students may have to eliminate elective classes in order to repeat required classes.  All required classes that are failed must be made up before the student is eligible for graduation.

WORK STUDY

Work study may be considered for students in the 11th and 12th grade, but this is at the principal's discretion.  The student must have a B average or higher to be eligible.  Work study is considered a privilege and is offered to enhance a student's ability to choose a life long profession.  If a student is interested in work study, a request needs to be made to the counselor or principal.  The student is responsible for proposing an idea for the work study and if it is approved by the principal, the student is then responsible for contacting the employer.  If the employer agrees to a work study, the student must have approval forms signed by the parents, employer, student, counselor, and principal.  A student must furnish his/her own transportation and the school is not responsible for accidents.  All work study agreements and terminations are at the principal's discretion.

STUDENT AIDES

Students may use a class period to serve as an aide with the approval of the Principal and cooperating teacher.  A maximum of 5 credits per semester may be earned on a credit/no credit basis, given on a nine-week basis and counted as an elective course.

TEXTBOOKS

All textbooks are assigned to students by number.  Be sure to safeguard such items from mutilation or loss as all costs for replacement or damage other than normal wear and tear will become the obligation of the individual assigned the book.  Be sure to inform the teacher of any undue damage you notice upon receipt of the textbooks so that you will not be charged at the close of the term.

Write your name in ink, your grade, and the present school year dates inside the front cover.  This makes it easier to get the book back to you in case it is mislaid.

POP MACHINES

The pop machines are available to all students.  If we have damage to these areas or to the machines, they will either be removed or closed for a certain period of time. Drinks and food will only be allowed in classrooms with teacher approval for special circumstances.  Pop and food are allowed in lockers and may be consumed during passing periods as long as it is not abused.  This privilege may be removed at anytime during the school year.  Student conduct will determine whether students will retain these privileges.  The machines will be closed in the morning before lunch to one half-hour after lunch.  They cannot be opened during this time because of federal school lunch requirements adopted by the Nebraska Board of Education.

The machines may be removed from the premises without any notice.

COLLEGE VISITS

Juniors and seniors who wish to visit colleges or post-secondary schools are urged to do so.  Plans for the visit should be made to minimize loss of instructional time.  Students are allowed to make a total of two college visits during their high school junior/senior years.  Students are also allowed 2 days for military testing.  A college visit shall be defined as a visitation for the purpose of orientation, registration, try-out for activities, finding housing, or any other post-secondary related matters.  College visits will be coordinated through the guidance counselor and must have the prior approval of the parents and principal.

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY BEHAVIOR

Students are expected to behave like ladies and gentlemen at all events and activities both at home and away.  Nothing can ruin a school's reputation faster than misconduct or misbehavior at events that are viewed by the general public.  We sincerely hope that others in your class will not embarrass you by their behavior.

CHAIN OF COMMAND

If any questions or concerns should arise during the course of student involvement or participation in a sanctioned activity of Eustis-Farnam Public Schools, the participant should first contact the sponsor or head coach.  If there is no resolution at that time he/she should then follow the appropriate chain of command as follows:

                                                Sponsor/Head Coach

                                                Activity Director/Athletic Director

                                                Principal

                                                Superintendent

                                                Board of Education

ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND DRUGS

Philosophy and Purpose:

Health problems of youth are primarily the responsibility of the home and community.  As members of the community, schools share in that responsibility because chemical problems often interfere with school behavior, student learning, and the fullest possible development of each student.   Because we believe that we have an obligation to address detrimental influences on student performance, the following substance abuse/activities participation policy was developed.  It is part of a total effort to discourage the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other illegal drugs by the students of our school.

Specific Rule:

During the school year, no student shall possess, use, consume, sell, or give away tobacco, alcohol, or other illegal drugs (or look alikes) in any form or in any amount.  This includes all times and places and is not limited to school property or activities.  In the instance of a school activity the administration has the option to use a breathalyzer if deemed necessary.  The rule is in force from the opening date of the fall sports season until the conclusion of the spring sports season and/or close of school at the end of the second semester.

It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of or use a controlled substance specifically prescribed for the student by qualified medical personnel.

Consequences for Violations Are as Follows:

After confirmation of the violation, the student will be suspended from participating in or attending all non-graded extracurricular school activities (not including college visitation days, college testing, and commencement) for a specific number of weeks from the date of verification of a violation.  A student involved in a school-sponsored activity may be required to participate in or attend all practice sessions during the time of suspension.  He/she may also be required to attend the scheduled activity.

Students who are found to be in violation of the drug/alcohol/tobacco policy shall be subject to all or part of the following disciplinary action.

First Violation: Four weeks (28 calendar days) suspension from school activities, 3-5 days OSS and police may be notified.   Students may be required to complete the Substance Abuse Screening Inventory at Region II in North Platte, Lexington, or McCook at the student's expense.

Second Violation: Six weeks (42 calendar days) suspension from school activities, 5-10 days OSS and police may be notified.  Students will be required to complete the Substance Abuse Screening Inventory at Region II in North Platte, Lexington, or McCook at the student's expense.  Evaluation for tobacco violations will be determined by the administration.  Suspensions not completed prior to the last student day of the school year and/or spring sporting season will be carried over and completed the next school year.

Third and Subsequent Violations: Suspension from school activities for one calendar year, , 5-10 day OSS-LTS or Expulsion and police may be notified.  The student will be required to complete a professional evaluation for chemical dependency or a smoking cessation class for tobacco violations at the student¢â¡Ás expense.  Upon completion of a prescribed program, the student may be reinstated in school activities.  Verification of successful completion of a chemical dependency program must be provided to school officials in writing prior to reinstatement.

Student Self-Report Option

If a student self-reports to the coach, sponsor, or administrator by the end of the next school day of the rules violation, the suspension will be reduced to two weeks (14 calendar days) for the first violation and three weeks (21 calendar days) for the second violation.

Anabolic Steroids

A student who possesses, dispenses, delivers, or administers anabolic steroids shall be subject to the following sanctions:

First Offense:    The student shall be prohibited from participating in any extracurricular activities for 30 consecutive days.

Second or Any Subsequent Offense:     The student shall be prohibited from participating in any extracurricular activities for one (1) calendar year from date of finding of violation.

Procedures Prior to Suspension:

In the event that this policy is violated and a student is to be suspended from an activity, the following process shall be initiated:

1.      The student shall be notified immediately of the alleged rule violation.

2.      The student shall meet with school officials.  Parents of the student will also be notified and invited to attend the meeting.

3.      During the meeting, school officials will summarize details related to the incident and then advise the student and parent of the intended consequences.  The student shall have an opportunity to present information or details related to the incident.  The student and parent shall also be afforded full opportunity to make any statements or request explanations related to the incident.

4.      The building administrator shall issue a decision related to suspension.  This decision is final and binding on all parties unless appealed in writing to the Superintendent of Schools.

Appeal Process

After a ruling of ineligibility resulting in suspension from activities has been made, a student and the student's parents may formally appeal the decision, in writing, to the Superintendent of Schools, provided an appeal is received five (5) calendar days from the first day such ineligibility shall take effect.

CLASS AND ORGANIZATION MEETINGS

Class and organization meetings may be called at the discretion of the sponsors in cooperation with the officers.  Meetings must be published in the daily bulletin in sufficient time so that all members can be notified of the planned meeting.

CONCESSIONS

Student clubs or classes will be allowed to sell concessions.  Concessions will be scheduled at the beginning of each sport season.  ALL profits will be given to the group selling, and expenses will have to be paid by the group or class for concession items.

SCHOOL DANCES

All school functions must be approved by the administration.

1.      Attendance at school dances will be for the students in Grades 9-12 of the Eustis-Farnam.

2.      Students must come to the dance in appropriate clothing.

3.      Dances will end at 10:00 p.m. on week nights; 12:00 on Friday/Saturdays.

4.      Dances should be planned to include the entire student body except the junior-senior prom.

5.      After students leave the dance, they will not be admitted again.

JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM

The prom will end at midnight.  Juniors and seniors may bring a date to the dance; the name of the student's date must be given to the class sponsor or principal on or before Wednesday the week of Prom and will be approved or rejected by the administration and class sponsor.  The date must be in the 9th grade or older.

In order to prevent unauthorized persons from attending school parties, all authorized persons are expected to remain at the party until it is over.  If persons leave early, they may not be allowed to re-enter.  Students must attend the entire prom in order to be eligible to attend the after Prom sanctioned activities.

ELIGIBILITY AND ACTIVITIES (Grades 7-12)

Inter-school participation of students in athletics, music, speech, and dramatics is governed by the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA).  This means that the student must meet particular requirements in regard to scholastic eligibility, attendance, age, and conduct in order to participate with another school.

All students in grades 7-12 will have a weekly eligibility requirement.  A student will become ineligible if he/she on the down list in two or more classes.  Teachers will turn in a list of students who are on the list by 8:00 a.m. on Friday to the office and inform the student that they were placed on the ineligible list for the next week.  When a student becomes ineligible, they will not be permitted to participate in or at any school-sponsored events or activities for the next week.

Any full-time student enrolled in high school who meets the necessary eligibility requirements may participate in extra-curricular high school activities, except for such reasons as physical and health requirements or for disciplinary reasons.

In addition to the above regulations, a student must be in attendance by the following times: 10:46 of a regular schedule, 10:16 of an activity day schedule, 11:16 of a Ten O'clock start schedule, and 9:58 of a 1:30 out schedule. If the student is not in attendance at the designated time he/or she shall not be allowed to participate in the game/practice or activity on that day.  If, however, he/she secures the Principal's permission prior to the absence from school, he/she shall then be considered eligible to participate if he/she meets the other scholastic requirements.

In case a student has been injured or has been under a doctor's care for an illness, the student must obtain written permission from his/her physician to participate.

In order to represent a high school in interscholastic athletic competition, a student must abide by eligibility rules of the Nebraska School Activities Association.  If you do not understand a summary of the rules listed below or you need an explanation of other requirements, consult the high school principal or athletic director:

1.      Student must be an undergraduate.

2.      Student must be enrolled in some high school on or before the 11th school day of the current semester.

3.      Student is ineligible if 19 years of age before September 1 of current school year.

4.      After a student's initial enrollment in grade nine, he/she shall be ineligible after eight semesters of school attendance.  After a student's initial enrollment in grade ten, he/she shall be ineligible after six semesters of school attendance.

5.      Student must have been enrolled in school the immediate preceding semester.

6.      Student must have received 20 semester hours of credit the immediate preceding semester.

7.      Once the season of a sport begins, a student shall compete only in athletic contests-meets in that sport that are scheduled by his/her school.  Any other competition will render the student ineligible for the remainder of the season in that sport.

8.      A student shall not participate in sports camps or clinics during the season of a sport in which he/she is involved, either as an individual or as a member of a team.

9.      A student shall not participate on an all-star team while a high school undergraduate.

10.  A student shall be ineligible to represent a school in interscholastic competition at the varsity level if the school is located in a school district other than the district in which his/her parents maintain their residence.  (Check with school administrator for an interpretation of rule if the school district where parents reside has no high school or if there are two or more high schools in a district.)

11.  Option Enrollment Transfers.  Eustis-Farnam students in grades ten, eleven, or twelve who have optioned to high school must apply for NSAA eligibility through the superintendent, principal or their designate.  The NSAA Executive Director shall render a decision on such application and shall notify the Eustis-Farnam Public Schools of such a decision.

12.  A student is ineligible for ninety school days if his/her parents have changed their residence to another school district and the student has remained in his/her former school that is in a different school district. (EXCEPTION:  If parents have moved after school has started, the student will be eligible to compete for the remainder of the school year, or if parents have moved during the summer which immediately precedes the school year and the student is in grade twelve and has attended the high school for two or more years, the student is eligible for that school year in the school district from which the parents moved.)
