EUSTIS-FARNAM STUDENT SELLING SERVICES

Eustis-Farnam Business Students Take Part in eBay Based Curriculum
Nine students at Eustis-Farnam Public School are currently enrolled in the pilot of an eBay-based business curriculum. The curriculum was developed during the summer of 2007. Last June, Dave Coover of AIM Institute and Robert Hayes, ESU 11's technology curriculum consultant, teamed up with fourteen high school teachers from ten school districts from ESU 11.
The project leader's goal was to develop a course that teaches eCommerce through relevant, engaging, hands-on activities. Several days were spent developing the frameworks for the curriculum. Mrs. Young, the Business Instructor at Eustis-Farnam, along with the thirteen other teachers spent the remainder of the summer developing lesson plans and activities for the course. Project leader, Dave Coover, then compiled the lessons into a course manual entitled 21st Century Marketing. In addition to Eustis-Farnam, other pilot schools include Arapahoe, Cambridge, Minden, Southern Valley, and Hildreth-Wilcox. Each of the participating schools received a digital camera, digital postal scale, funding to establish a PayPal account, boxes, tape, and miscellaneous shipping supplies to be used in the operation of their newly established business.
21st Century Marketing is offered during the second semester at Eustis-Farnam. During the first unit, students were introduced to the concept of entrepreneurialism. In the next unit students learned to develop a business model. The students went through the process of developing their school based business. The purpose of their business is to sell products online through the eBay auction site. After breaking into teams students brainstormed to come up with a business name as well as a slogan and a logo. The students decided to name their business, " Eustis - Farnam Student Selling Services".
During the study of Unit 3, the students learned the process for marketing a product on eBay. To start the business a bank account had to be opened. Next an email account was acquired for the business. Finally an eBay account and PayPal account were established. Each of the students donated an item to be sold on eBay. The students then used their writing, grammar, photography, accounting, and computer skills to create the listing. Because eBay requires sellers to be at least 18 years old to post a listing on their site, the instructor does the actual posting of the item.
The students were asked to donate one item each to be listed on eBay. Items that the students have brought in include: Adidas Cap, Husker Pillow, Antique Glass Milk Bottle, Glass Coke Cookie/Candy Jar, Cubs Sweatshirt, Delta Tub/Shower Faucet, Boys Columbia Coat, Faded Glory Jeans, and John Deere Salt/Pepper Shakers. The student¡Ùs active listings may be viewed at eBay¡Ùs web site under our eBay seller ID which is: eustisfarnammarketing
The goals the students have set for Eustis-Farnam Student Selling Services include:
Short term goals:
-
Acquiring at least 25 donated items to sell on eBay by April 16.
-
Design business T-Shirts for class members by April 1.
-
Listing at least 25 items for sale on eBay by May 1.
-
Create an informative business brochure to be distributed to potential donors.
Long term goals:
- Raise enough revenue to provide scholarships to future EF graduates.
